Kamehameha Schools Hawai‘i Campus approached our firm to create a logo for the Kumuola Science Education Center. It had to represent the land the Center was situated on and the community and student engagement the Center was facilitating. It also had to work together with the Kamehameha Schools brand.

Design Solution: Working with Hawaiian cultural experts and educators, our company was able to develop a logo that both spiritually and visually captured the importance of why the Center was built in this specific location and its connection to all who are invited to the facility. Metaphorically, it visually represents the community/student engagement and connections of ‘Āina-based learning (land-based). Kumuola literally means “A Source of Life.” Our company drew inspiration from the “Kumulipo” or the cosmogonic genealogy chant in Hawaiian culture. The logo was entirely hand drawn, incorporating organic lines showing movement and growth. The lines start from a singular point, then branch out, connecting and growing, reflecting the source of learning between the land and the community.
