Many know, some may not… but I am a product of t

Many know, some may not… but I am a product of that island. I grew up in Upcountry, Makawao. I am a Maui girl. The flattening of an entire town and the mass loss of lives on the island that I still consider home hurts in a way that is difficult to put into words.

The one thing that I cling to is being “Maui Strong.” Maui people can be characterized as warm, friendly, loving and at the same time we can be tough, rough around the edges, gritty with a quiet resilience that is ingrained from childhood. It is also a way of taking care of others even when you are facing hardships yourself. It is the kind of mentality that doesn’t allow self-pity or wallowing. It is the automatic, all hands on deck kind of thinking that binds the community together.

I realize that many of you may not have family or know people on Maui that have been displaced and would still like to help in some way. I urge you to please donate to either:

Hawaii Community Foundation Maui Strong Fund (they provide funds to vetted nonprofits)

Maui Fire Store — Maui Firefighters and Ocean Safety Officers Fund for those who lost their homes (the only legit fundraiser specifically for Maui’s first responders)

As a thank you from SLD for donating, we will send anyone who donates to either or both of these funds our “Maui Strong” sticker (until we run out). Please email me your mailing address and proof of donation for one or both of the mentioned funds (receipt) and we will mail your sticker at no charge. The Maui Fire Store is operated by active Maui Fire Department Fire Fighters and this fund is approved by MFD. The donations received are used to help their affected fire and other first responder families’ needs. Each family has different needs and they are working with each family individually to provide for them. They are proud and humbled by the amount of support they have received thus far.

Reflecting back to my 4-H days growing up on Maui. Although I didn’t have livestock, I earned my awards through baking, photography and sewing (who knew?).

Now, we have the privilege to work with the good people who organize 4-H statewide… through UHM CTAHR Family and Consumer Sciences. Please follow them @hawaii4h … they help shape the lives of keiki in many ways. As they have done so for me.

in this case, it’s OK to be behind the curve. I’d like to give a big shout out to SLD, Stacey Leong Design. I met Stacey Leong and her partner Karyn Yasui Lau a lifetime ago, via our mutual involvement in @aigadesign, most likely when I was president of the Boston chapter. Or Austin. We don’t recall.

I was invited to jury a show and speak to the Honolulu chapter way back when. To date, Stacey has been the only person I know professionally to keep me on their mailing list for 20 years. I’ve always considered it very thoughtful.

A month ago, when I got back to Texas, after three months in the central pacific, I had a stack of mail. One envelope was a Calendar celebrating 20 years of Stacey Leong Design.

and like this post, it seems her Calendar was a little bit behind, no doubt due to an international pandemic. The studios design is always impeccable, and their use of photography is nothing short of succulent – bold, romantic, with flavors of Hawai`I.

when I opened the Calendar, it was not even two weeks since I had seen Stacey and Karyn in Honolulu. It was a treat to see the opening pages of the calendar, a collection of photographs taken over the last 20 years. Imagine my surprise and delight to find a group photograph taken when I was there to lecture. I don’t know if Karyn made the lei I’m wearing in the photo, but she made the one I was wearing when we had lunch last. Both of them, the lei from 20 years old, and the one from last month, are in my museum of a home. Thanks, Special K!!

And thanx, Stacey. May you enjoy continuous success with SLD and all your future endeavors.

We don’t do it often, but we have a summer intern. Honestly, interns are typically more trouble than help. But this one’s special. Known her since she was a lil kid. She’ll be a junior at Punahou next year… and she’s already quite talented. Plus her Daddy is a good friend 😉😁 that makes a difference, too.
